Vancouver police say nearly one of every five drivers checked during a recent six-night CounterAttack campaign was impaired or prohibited.
Constable Lindsey Houghton says the results are completely unacceptable, considering recent statistics show B-C’s tough, new drunk driving laws have cut the number of impaired driving deaths in half since last October.
Houghton says 524 people were checked during the latest roadside blitz across Vancouver.
He says 98 people were ticketed for impaired driving offences and seven were taken off the road for driving while prohibited, for a total of 105 impounded vehicles over six days.

Pennsylvania State Police made a record number of arrests for driving under the influence in 2010, while the number of alcohol-related crashes investigated by troopers dropped slightly, Commissioner Frank Noonan announced today.
“Protecting the public is the highest priority for the Pennsylvania State Police,” Noonan said. “Taking impaired drivers off the road is one of the best ways to keep our citizens safe.”
Troopers made 17,695 DUI arrests in 2010, an increase of nearly 5 percent over the 16,900 DUI arrests reported the previous year. It was the ninth consecutive year in which the number of DUI arrests by state police increased.
The number of alcohol-related crashes investigated by troopers decreased from 4,625 in 2009 to 4,595 last year, Noonan said.
Noonan said the expansion of the department’s drug recognition expert program and continuation of its Operation Nighthawk program are playing a role in the growing number of DUI arrests by troopers. Other factors include the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s continuing commitment to allocating funds to state police for DUI enforcement and his department’s partnership with the Pennsylvania DUI Association.

The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office will join forces with other law enforcement agencies March 11th – 20th and April 15th – 24th looking for drunk drivers with an emphasis on those under the age of 21.
Officers will conduct additional sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols as part of the continuing effort to apprehend drunk drivers.
Motor vehicle crashes remain the number one killer of teenagers in America, and nearly one-third of the fatality crashes are alcohol related.
Spring, the season of proms, school breaks and graduation parties, can be a dangerous time for young drivers. Alcohol related traffic fatalities typically rise during these months, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The consequences of a DWI or DUI are far more serious than an impaired driver may realize. Arkansas teenagers driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) between .02 and .07 can be arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI). If the BAC is .08 or greater, an arrest of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) will occur.
Arkansas’ penalties for underage DUI are substantial and include the loss of driving privileges, court imposed fines and community service. The fine for an underage DUI ranges from $100 to $2000. In addition, there are attorney’s fees and significantly higher insurance premiums.
